4K hits the road with Taiwan’s first OB van
TAIWAN: Infinity Multimedia Production has worked with Sony to set up Taiwan’s first 4K OB van. The vehicle was used to record the events of the Taiwan general election at the beginning of 2016 and was fitted by Sony’s Professional Solutions Taiwan (PST), a team with previous experience in designing and outfitting OB vans.
Infinity gave the green light in May 2015, meaning only a short time was allowed for designing and building the OB van before the election. Sony’s XAVC recording format was selected for the installation. ‘We found XAVC to be an efficient compression format. Although the file size is far larger than HD MPEG GOP 50bps, it produces significant improvements in picture quality, especially with the relatively large capacity of the 4K images,’ explained Lin Jiawei, vice president at Infinity.
It has multiple other Sony products installed, including the MVS-7000X 4K switcher, PWS-4400 4K/HD multi-port A/V storage unit and the BVM-X300 4K Trimaster El OLED master monitor. The PMW-F55 CineAlte FK HD camera was also used.
‘To bring out the best in the F55, we teamed it up with the CA4000 camera adaptor. Together they provide a wider dynamic range, colour gamut, high sensitivity and high-speed recording,’ Mr Jiawei noted.
‘We chose Sony for its high continuity system,’ he continued. ‘Our crew found it easy to use the company’s equipment and we didn’t have to worry about system compatibility. Working with PST right from the design stage also really paid off. It brought in its technical engineers from HQ and even provided technical trainings for our crew.’
Kao Chengnan, head of content creation sales and marketing at PST, also commented on the project. ‘Infinity’s first ever 4K OB van truly underscores Sony’s commitment to understand the needs of our clients and deliver not just high quality products, but superior consultancy and training support too.’
