AVL Marketing fixes intelligibility at the Amal Jyothi College of Engineering

INDIA: A recent installation carried out by Kochi-based AVL Marketing has seen an Allen & Heath digital mixing console and Quest loudspeaker system installed at the Amal Jyothi College of Engineering in Kanjirappally. With equipment supplied through New-Delhi based distributor, Sun Infonet, the goal of the project was to increase audio intelligibility in the college’s auditorium.

The loudspeaker setup now in use in the auditorium features Quest HPI 111 enclosures mounted to the wall at head height on either side of the stage, with QM 212AS active subwoofers placed underneath. Additionally, a pair of QM 10DC monitors are located on the stage.

‘With the new Quest loudspeakers installed at our college it has overcome all the previous hurdles, including fixing the unintelligible sound caused by reflections from the walls in the diamond-shaped hall,’ explained Ajai Mathew, assistant professor of electronics and communication engineering at Amal Jyothi College of Engineering. ‘Additionally, the throw is pretty good at all sides of the hall due to the arraying of speakers, and the HPI 111 cabinets are brilliant at preventing feedback. The deep, clear punch from the subwoofers can be felt uniformly throughout the hall without any indication of their location, and the QM 10DC stage monitors provide great intelligibility before feedback.’

Accompanying the new loudspeaker setup, AVL Marketing supplied the college with an Allen & Heath QU-16 digital mixing console.

‘Working on this new compact mixer is like a dream come true,’ continued Mr Mathew. ‘Allen & Heath has simplified all the complexities in the operation of a digital mixer. The interfaces are easily understandable and the response from the mixer and moving faders is great. The effects engine also really surprised me. Almost all of the effects required for band or studio setups are incorporated in a simple way with the freedom to edit every minute parameter.

‘The touch screen interface is also wonderful,’ he continued. ‘The entire setting on each channel can be viewed clearly with great colour combinations. The PREQ plot really gives the user a clear idea about the frequency on which he is adjusting the gain, which is also useful for determining the frequencies causing feedback and reverberation.’

Mr Mathew was equally impressed with the service provided by the installers, conlcuding that ‘it gives me immense pleasure to thank AVL Marketing for providing us with audio equipment that exactly suits the needs of our venue. It was a great challenge for the team to make sound clear in the auditorium, as the diamond shape of the hall prevents us from using many typical solutions.’
