Alcons targets immersive cinema installations with CRS12

Published:

Designed to meet the requirements of current and future digital cinema immersive audio formats, the new CRS12GT from Alcons Audio is a two-way passive-filtered loudspeaker utilising the same HF pro-ribbon technology as the rest of its product line. The ribbon technology reportedly allows the loudspeakers to deliver a high dynamic range with up to 90 per cent less distortion than traditional systems.

The CRS12GT consists of one RBN601 6-inch pro-ribbon driver for high frequency reproduction and a vented 12-inch mid-bass driver for the low frequencies. Combined, these are stated to produce an ‘exceptionally’ wide and uniform sound stage throughout the entire listening area. The HF section features a 1,000W peak power input, reportedly capable of achieving 1:15 RMS-to-peak dynamic range from 1,000Hz to beyond 20kHz. The ribbon driver also reportedly eliminates the compression threshold present in traditional loudspeakers, resulting in a linear output without distortion ‘at any SPL’.

Two versions of the CRS12GT are available, providing different coverage specifications. A 90-degrees by 40-degrees (H x V) dispersion model named CRS12GT90 is the first option, while a 60-degrees by 30-degrees (H x V) dispersion named CRS12GT60 is designed for the surround locations closest to the screen channels.

The unit is intended to be driven by the manufacturer’s ALC amplifier loudspeaker controller and is available in 4- or 8-ohm versions. The ALC features Signal Integrity Sensing pre-wiring technology that reportedly provides increased response accuracy regardless of cable length by performing cable/connection compensation between the speakers and the amp. Additionally, the speakers can be finished in any RAL colour to match with interiors.
