BCI helps RTM Ipoh go live with Lawo, Focal and Netia
MALAYSIA: The RTM Ipoh radio station recently went on air, boasting a plethora of newly installed equipment courtesy of technical and systems integrator Broadcast Communications International Pte Ltd (BCI). The project was awarded to BCI’s partner, Integrasi Naluri Sdn Bhd, which took the role of main contractor.
The main products involved in this project comprised Netia’s Radio Assist 8.1 radio automation solution, Lawo 32-fader Sapphire consoles and Focal loudspeakers. The project included equipping the radio station’s main control room, the on air, standby and multipurpose studios, two editing rooms, an ingest room, and its auditorium control room with new equipment. The installation took approximately two months to complete, which was followed by a month of training for staff.
The main control room was equipped with a Lawo Nova17 audio router with built in silence detector, as well as Lawo Vistool and Lawo Nova Connect software for routing audio signals. Also installed were a number of Focal CMS50 loudspeakers for monitoring, a Comrex Access IP/POTs audio codec, an Audionics Com2-16 talkback matrix intercom system and Netia’s Radio Assist 8.1.
Meanwhile, the on air studio was equipped with a Lawo Crystal16 on air broadcast console, a Comrex Stac12 Talkshow telephone system, Focal CMS65 loudspeakers, a Bel Digital 5110E broadcast profanity delay unit and a Netia AirDDO 8.1 on air playout system.
The standby studio boasts a similar inventory, including a Lawo Crystal16 on air broadcast console, a Comrex Stac12 Talkshow telephone system, Focal CMS65 speakers, another Bel Digital 5110E broadcast profanity delay unit and a Netia AirDDO 8.1 on air playout system.
The multipurpose studio now includes a 32-fader Lawo Sapphire multipurpose console, an Avid Pro Tools HDX professional DAW, Focal CMS50 speakers for near field monitoring and CMS65s for main monitoring duties, in addition to a Bricasti Design System 1 reverb processor and remote.
Elsewhere, the two editing rooms were fitted with a Lawo Crystal 8 Edit production mixer with Vistools CS for visual monitoring of audio signals, Netia’s Radio Assist 8.1 automation system and Focal CMS50 speakers.
The ingest room now boasts a Lawo Crystal 8 Edit production mixer, Netia’s Radio Assist 8.1 and Focal CMS50 speakers, while the auditorium control room contains a Lawo multipurpose console. Completing the list of equipment for this space are further Focal CMS50 and CMS65s, a Bricasti System 1 reverb processor and Netia’s Radio Assist 8.1.
‘The first problem we faced was to lay a three-phase electrical cable from the Tenaga Nasional (National Electrical company) to the RTM main building,’ said BCI’s Brian Ong. ‘The electrical contractor had to dig three different holes just to lay the cables, and they also needed to turn the power off for the main building in order for them to complete the connection. There were several other small issues here and there, but we managed to overcome them all,’ he added.
‘In the tender, we were also asked to supply the pre-warning fire alarm system which is different from the normal fire alarm,’ he added. ‘The two on air studios in RTM Ipoh are the largest among all RTM studios in whole of Malaysia. We also had to design a 5.6m long on air table to fit into the room.’
