GBI Keluarga Allah church upgrades with Blackmagic Design
INDONESIA: GBI Keluarga Allah (Family of God) Church has upgraded its video workflow with a Blackmagic Design Atem 2 M/E production switcher. The vision mixer was purchased through Costal Electronics in Singapore. The Solo City church was founded in 1989 and now has a congregation of around 20,000 for its main campus. A further 15,000 worship at its satellite churches in other cities around the country.
The church broadcasts its services on radio and TV stations, and as such it has a strong broadcast setup. GBI Keluarga Allah uses Sony cameras, including two D50s, a DSR390 and four PMW-EX3s. Blackmagic’s Atem 2 M/E production switcher and broadcast panel and a Decklink Micro video hub 16x16 as a video router are also part of the broadcast setup. Aside from this two CS-7260 TV One edge blending and converter systems and three Sanyo PLC-XF45 projectors are in use for the projection system and a Midas 16 channel audio mixer covers the stereo recording.
The Atem production switcher was purchased to replace an older unit from Echolabs, a company that had been purchased by Blackmagic Design. ‘Echolabs is good product, we have used it for around four or five years, but for last one or two years, our Echolabs Nova 1700 video mixer had a problem,’ explains GBI Keluarga Allah’s Joshua Edy. ‘I knew that Echolabs was acquired by Blackmagic Design, and I think they have done a great job and made many great improvements with the Atem product, while still keeping it low cost.’
The important factors when the church was deciding on the new vision mixer included reliability and flexibility. ‘We needed reliability, because of we cannot retake what we record. It is impossible to asked our pastor to stop and repeat his last word because our system stopped,’ explained Mr Edy. ‘We needed flexibility because we can’t always replace the whole system. We have to choose new equipment that can connect with our old system. Blackmagic Design could meet our requirements.’
The church is certainly happy with its latest purchase, and Mr Edy has a lot of praise for the Atem system. ‘I think Blackmagic Design’s workflow is good because it’s simple. My favourite features are that there is upgradeable firmware and it’s networkable.’
Blackmagic Design products are now at the heart of the church’s visual setup. Feeds from the camera system come into the Blackmagic Design SmartHub where the signals are distributed the broadcast setup.
The Atem switcher is used to add in the text to be overlaid on the image before it is sent back through the SmartHub to the projectors. THe switcher is also used to send the final feed to the recording system.
