Qube offers new portable line arrays
Qube’s latest effort to target the growing demand for compact portable professional line arrays is the QA108 line array system.
Both the QA108 passive and the QA108a active two-way enclosures are equipped with an 8-inch neodymium magnet woofer and a specially designed 150mm (6-inch) neodymium planar tweeter known as a Pleated Diaphragm Tweeter (PDT) coupled to a waveguide that boasts a cylindrical projection with a reported dispersion of 10-degrees vertical x 100-degrees horizontal.
The manufacturer claims myriad advantages to its PDT tweeter including an increase in the vertical projection surface; a multiple fold design reportedly capable of moving air at a speed four times greaterthan a single-fold design; an increase in the efficiency of high frequencies thanks to a radiation surface four times larger than a conventional tweeter or an equivalent compression driver; and a reduced distortion factor that the manufacturer claims delivers 10 times less distortion than a conventional high frequency driver or tweeter.
All QA108 compact enclosures have a trapezoidal shape and are constructed with 12mm Baltic birch plywood finished with scratch and scuff resistant black paint. The cabinets are provided with two integrated aluminum fly points for suspension allowing 10 different settings in 1-degree steps. The enclosures have been designed for use as main left/right array systems in small to mid-size applications and with extreme curvature arrays they can be used as down-fills, front-fills, side-fills or as compact standalone units as well as ground-stacked on top of subwoofers.
The QA108a features Class-D amplifiers with a switch mode power supply, delivering 400W RMS LF and 100W RMS HF. A built-in DSP provides crossover, equalisation and component protection. The DSP has a four-position switch allowing users to select between four different EQ curves, with each selection dependent on the number of the cabinets used: either one, two, four, eight or 12 speakers.
The QA108 features a passive crossover network with a built-in soft thermal protection circuit boasting an auto-reset feature for the LF woofer and the HF PDT. Biamp or full-range passive operation mode is user selectable from the rear panel.
The QA118Sa is the matching active subwoofer for the QA108a. The subwoofer system is loaded with a B&C custom-made 18-inch woofer and a 4-inch voice coil in a bass reflex design, and powered by an internal 1,200W Class-D amp with a switch mode power supply. The manufacturer reports an extended frequency response that goes down to 33Hz, and 132dB SPL. The DSP controller provides six different equalisation presets and six different delay settings.
The QA118S is the companion subwoofer for QA108 cabinets. It has the same B&C woofer as the QA118Sa in a bass-reflex designed cabinet that is capable of handling 1,200W at 4-ohms. With a reported extended frequency response down to 36Hz, the QA118S delivers 132dB SPL.
