Resorts World Genting amphitheatre upgrades original Nexo system
MALAYSIA: The 45,000 sq-ft Arena of Stars amphitheatre at Resorts World Genting has replaced its original Nexo Alpha sound reinforcement system with a new design based around the French manufacturer’s Geo T line array. The upgrade was handled by Nexo distributor Audio Solutions Sdn Bhd, and completed in just two months.
Originally opened in 2000, the 5,300-capacity Arena of Stars has reportedly staged some 1,300 concerts to date including performers such as Elton John, Cliff Richard, Kenny G, The Black Eyed Peas, the Vienna Boys Choir, Jacky Cheung and more. It is a centrepiece attraction at Resorts World Genting, which welcomes an approximated 20 million visitors every year.
The centre’s management company, Genting Malaysia Berhad, reportedly approached Audio Solutions Sdn Bhd to replace the original 12 year old Alpha installation, with testing and commissioning by Nexo’s own Scott Mason and Stuart Kerrison. According to Audio Solutions sales engineer Rico Yong, the manufacturer’s NS-1 simulation system was used to configure the optimal coverage for the venue.
‘Arena of Stars is a large venue – the software provided us with the correct configurations to ensure exceptional coverage with minimised sound reflections,’ he explained.
Key to the installation are a number of lightweight 8-inch Geo T4805 cabinets, including four enclosures in the flown centre cluster alongside two 8-inch Geo T2815 15-degree array modules controlled by an NX242-ES4 processor. To the left and right of the main stage, meanwhile, are two main hangs of 10 Geo T4805 enclosures per side plus two T2815 cabinets.
Two further L-R hangs provide side-fill, each comprising 12 T4805s and two T2815s. Pre-existing PS15 cabinets are used to provide front-fill with power via a Camco DX24 amplifier which has been upgraded with an NX242-ES4 processor. Low end support is delivered via 12 ground-stacked 18-inch Raysub 18PT subwoofers controlled by a further NX242-ES4. The entire system is managed by an XTA DP 448.
At front of house meanwhile is the venue’s existing Midas Heritage 4000 analogue console, while a Yamaha PM5D digital desk – equipped with a Nexo NX-Y16ES 16-channel Ethersound digital interface – has been purchased for monitoring.
