Sennheiser and DAS Audio installed into Souk Okaz public theatre
SAUDI ARABIA: Sennheiser Group has announced that its Middle East regional office recently partnered with Modern Lifestyles to set up a state-of-the-art audio system for the 3,000 capacity Souk Okaz public theatre in Taif, Saudi Arabia.
Project contractor Ascon Co Ltd approached Jeddah-based distributor Modern Lifestyles to design a solution that would account for the echo and reverb issues found in the semi-permanent tent structure. Given the nature of the theatre structure, the system needed to be able to operate effectively under a wide range of weather and site conditions.
Modern Lifestyles proposed a solution by Sennheiser Middle East that included a DAS Audio Aero 8-A line array system and Sennheiser G3 wireless systems with antenna distribution. The two companies worked closely together through each phase of the project, including the programming and commissioning of the system.
‘With the poetry and story telling competitions taking centre place at the fair, Saudi Diyar and Ascon had set extremely high expectations of the audio systems,’ said Majd Al Khattib, technical director at Modern Lifestyles. ‘The solution had to be customised to handle speech and poetry with the utmost clarity. These requirements coupled with the complexity raised by the tent-like structure meant that we needed to select a vendor with both the best products and the most professional support services.
‘We carried out extensive market analysis and we were extremely impressed with the professionalism displayed by the Sennheiser team throughout the stringent selection process,’ he explained. ‘They were the most thorough and unlike any of the other vendors, they carried out extensive acoustic analysis with the direct support from DAS Audio to present us with simulations that ensured optimal performance.’
The design team overcame various challenges during the project, one in particular being that the auditorium is situated atop a 1,900m mountain plateau. ‘There were certain complexities that required for us to be flexible in our design approach,’ commented Ryan Burr, technical sales manager for Sennheiser. ‘To ensure that we got the project realised in a concise and efficient manner, we took the decision to get Sennheiser UK’s sound reinforcement specialist involved with the commissioning.’
Modern Lifestyle's system integration team completed the installation within four days, after which Sennheiser ME began extensive testing of the system. This involved sound pressure testing and comparison of the system's actual performance to that during simulation, for which the results were reported to have ‘met and exceeded’ the performance metrics on all criteria, including the budget.
‘We are excited about launching this theatre in 2013,’ enthused Mr Al Khattib. ‘We are sure that the experience will be different now that the sound system and all other ancillary components are ready. We thank both Sennheiser ME and DAS Audio for their support, patience and professionalism in carrying out this project with us.’
