Seoul’s revellers head towards Meca
KOREA: Officially opened in April 2015, Club Meca is a new industrially inspired venue located in an upmarket district of Seoul that has quickly earned a reputation for its house and hip hop DJ performances in addition to celebrity sightings. DasanSR was invited to design the club’s audio system in the underground venue, for which MD Jeff Na appointed himself as project manager.
‘The concept of this venue was to provide entertainment to different groups of people at the same time,’ explained Mr Na. ‘One area is more intimate and private in the upper level while the ground level features a stage area for DJs and live performances. It was a good challenge for me and I worked closely with the club’s management team to create spaces that allowed separation of music without actually closing off the area.’
The heavily reinforced sound system on the ground level consists of two per side EAW Avalon Club speakers, rigged to a custom system on the main stage in addition to four EAW Avalon SUB.two subwoofers, powered by an 8-channel Powersoft X8 amplifier. The main LFs are driven by four K3 amplifiers whilst the high/mids are powered by dual Powersoft K2 models. The DJ area, which is also equipped with a Behringer X32 digital mixing console for live performances, is monitored by a pair of EAW MW12 speakers powered by a single K2 amplifier. EAW UX8800 and UX3600 processors manage the main and delay speaker systems respectively, whilst a PS-200 power supply sequencer has been added to equipment rack for both ease and peace of mind when powering up and powering down.
The more intimate upper levels are suitably equipped for big occasions when the need arises with a dBTechnologies self-powered system. This combines six DVX D12 HP speakers together with dual DVX D18 HP subwoofers and a further two DVX D10 HP models as delays. A VIP room completes the setup with four D8 HP speakers. Both Sennheiser ew135 G3 and Shure SM58K-LC wireless microphones are employed for announcements and live music, whilst Canare cabling was used throughout.
According to the Korean edition of Timeout.com, Club Meca had sealed its reputation as a top dance club in Seoul within the first week of opening. Naturally, the club’s owners are also pleased with the audio system design as it continues to demonstrate a huge return on an investment based upon quality.
