Three more venues opt for Funktion One
UAE: Funktion One speaker systems have been installed into three terrace bars in Dubai. The projects were all completed by the manufacturer’s local partner EmTec and all feature customised colour schemes.
First on the list is Maya, a Mexican restaurant and terrace bar located at Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa. Here the project spreads over several different zones including the ground floor terrace bar, various dining areas and a further rooftop terrace. F101 cabinets form the bulk of the system at Maya, powered by F40Q and F60Q amplifiers. Outside, the speakers have been custom painted in cream and black featuring stainless steel powder-coated grilles with the more standard all black look inside.
Approximately 30 speakers have been installed to cover the various zones in Maya. ‘It’s mainly 101s and 81s inside,’ noted EmTec’s Andrew Williams. ‘It’s far more than a background music system. We’ve got six zones with remotes so you can control the level from downstairs.’
Further to this, another Funktion One system has been installed for the weekend when DJs play on the two terrace spaces. ‘They want a bit of a party on the weekend so they have 101s and single 18-inch subs to cover this area,’ explained EmTec’s Alex Bracken. ‘We’ve put in some extra points so they can plug in the system elsewhere.’
The DJ position is in the corner of the rooftop terrace, allowing the performer to see downstairs. ‘The DJ wanted to be able to see the rest of the venue so we moved the position,’ said Mr Williams. ‘Cabling was the only real challenge in this venue, the rest of it was a nice easy job. There were no real issues.’
A second venue to get the Funktion One treatment is the poolside bar of the Grosvenor House Hotel. The pool is covered by four cream Res1 speakers with two single 18-inch subs for low end support. Added to this F81 speakers cover individual seating areas. ‘These are nice secluded areas,’ said Mr Williams. ‘Because they are smaller speakers, it’s not pounding but you still get to feel all the bass and the nuances.’
The main challenge for this retro fit installation was creating discrete cable runs – something the company describes as the most difficult cabling job it has done. ‘We had to put the amplifiers inside the restaurant and run cables to each cabinet from there,’ explained Mr Williams. ‘All the cables had to go everywhere in the venue from that location, some cables are running 150m. We had to use long high-quality cables from Van Damme. It has to be done properly.’
A final installation is at Deck on 8, the poolside terrace for the Media One Hotel. Here the venue has installed white cabinets with black grilles to cover the bar area. ‘Here we have used a few F88s, but mainly F101s,’ said Mr Williams. ‘The F88s provide a spread on the main dancefloor,’ added Mr Bracken.
The speakers have been mounted in pairs on either white custom-built poles or attached to palm trees on custom brackets. As with the other two terrace bars, the system has been tuned after install to ensure it is performing correctly and covering the appropriate areas.
