A single solution for a variety of services
USA: Pennsville Baptist Church operates a variety of services to cater for its varied congregation. This includes two services on a Sunday – one in the morning, one in the evening – as well as its ‘Kidz Church’, Sunday School and Ladies Bible Study, which is held on a Wednesday night. Although the church’s services are still considered to be very traditional in nature, a praise band has formed during the last couple of years and can include between five and 10 members, and sometimes comprises even more, becoming an integral part of the Sunday morning service.
As a result, Sunday mornings at Pennsville Baptist can include several soloists performing in addition to the church choir. It was therefore deemed essential that the church invest in upgrading its sound reinforcement capabilities to ensure the quality of both music reproduction and speech intelligibility. To design and deploy a new sound system, local A/V integration company Good Sounds was engaged as it specialises in the installation of audio, video, and lighting solutions for commercial spaces, schools and houses of worship.
‘The main sanctuary is roughly 21m wide from pew to pew and 26m long from the stage to the back pew,’ reveals Good Sounds owner and principal system designer, Dwight Brown. ‘The main area seats approximately 800 people. To the left of the stage — running the entire length of the sanctuary — there is an overflow section that houses approximately 100-120 moveable seats. The stage faces the length of the room; so solid vertical throw was every bit as important as having broad horizontal coverage. Church management wanted a system that wouldn’t visually detract from the aesthetics of the room while being able to deliver consistent sound coverage throughout the space.
‘Given these requirements,’ the system designer continues, ‘the WorxAudio X5i-P made a compelling choice for this project. The system is flown from the centre of the sanctuary, approximately 2.5m in front of the stage at a height of 5.5m to the top of the array.’
The compact powered line array system incorporates five modules within a single cabinet. ‘This loudspeaker system has 160-degrees of horizontal coverage and 40-degrees of vertical throw, which blankets the entire sanctuary with incredibly clean, expressive sound,’ Mr Brown notes. ‘Its all-in-one design presents a very clean, uncluttered appearance and the integrated PXD-2580 power amp makes this loudspeaker system a complete turnkey solution.’
With the new system up and running, the congregation and staff at Pennsville Baptist Church are reportedly impressed, while Good Sounds was pleased with the support it received from the manufacturer.
‘The speakers that we replaced were just not right for the room and didn’t compliment the praise music that was so important to the service. The new WorxAudio system sounds terrific and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. This installation has already led to another project. When one job leads to another, it really doesn’t get any better,’ concludes Mr Brown. ‘The WorxAudio staff has been incredible to work with and is always willing to assist with whatever I need. I learned from a prior WorxAudio installation and that experience carried over into this project, along with the help of WorxAudio’s director of commercial audio, Tony Flammia.’
