Alcons adds LR18 to pro-ribbon line-array

Following in the design footsteps of the larger format LR28, the LR18 is Alcon Audio’s latest three-way pro-ribbon line-source sound system, incorporating multiple-patented pro-ribbon technology for its mid and high frequencies. According to the Dutch manufacturer, the LR18 is capable of ‘producing an extremely fast impulse response with up to 90 per cent less distortion, providing an intuitive linear response with high intelligibility and non-compressed identical tonal balance at any SPL’. Furthermore, the cylindrical wave-front of the RBN702rs 7-inch pro-ribbon transducer, together with the acoustically and electronically symmetrical component configuration, collaborate to create what Alcons describes as tight pattern control in both the vertical and horizontal planes.

The MF-section consists of a 6.5-inch mid-range transducer with a neodymium motor-structure coaxially mounted behind the RBN702rsr. Dual reflex-loaded 8-inch woofers with oversized 3-inch voice coils and a neodymium motor structure make up the LF section. The pro-ribbon’s 1,500W power handling and RMS-to-peak ratio of 1:15 is driven by two channels of the manufacturer’s Sentinel amplified loudspeaker controller. System optimisation is provided by the LR18-specific drive processing and feedback in the Sentinel, including presets for phase-matched low-frequency extensions.

Sharing the same dimensions and same dual 8-inch LF transducers as the LR18, the LB18 module reportedly enlarges the array length, extends the controlled cylindrical projection down to the lower frequencies and increases the throw capabilities of the low-mid frequencies over distance. Signal Integrity Sensing (SIS) pre-wiring is stated to ensure dynamic cable/connector compensation between the LR18/LB18 and the ALC software, without any pre-set requirements, offering what the manufacturer describes as 1:1 undistorted natural sound reproduction, regardless of cable length and amplifier impedance load.

The rigging system enables angle-setting on the cabinets without lifting the array, resulting in safer and faster setup with minimal handling and a WLL of 24 cabinets under 10:1 safety (LB18 32 units). Furthermore, array configurations can be simulated in the new release of Alcons Ribbon Calculator (ARC3), Alcons’ high-resolution 3D simulation program. As part of the Ribbon Network, the LR18 comes with a six-year limited warranty.
