Amber Technology does the time with Gefen

AUSTRALIA: A high-security correctional facility in Australia turned to customised audiovisual technology as it sought to kit out its 110 inmate cells with a digital education system. Local distributor, Amber Technology was called upon and provided a Gefen A/V distribution solution for the ‘in-cell’ workstations.

The network of computers needed to be secure and remotely managed with the ability to provide inmates with content and restricted internet access, while routing content to any digital workstation within the facility. To enable this, a system of Gefen Video/KVM over IP EXT-DVIKVM-LAN-LTX senders and EXT-DVIKVM-LAN-LRX receivers was developed by a team of specialist security integrators.

‘Our team was asked to create a system that would provide controlled access and content delivery to multiple sites simultaneously, all while using the existing IT infrastructure,’ said Michael Shaw, business development manager at Amber Technology. ‘The high security nature of the facility significantly limited our installation options, but Gefen’s KVM over IP solution made it possible to create a secure network of 110 in-cell workstations and 110 remotely located computers in an active correctional facility.’

Gefen’s open API was used to allow authorities to control each workstation’s content from a remote location across multiple delivery points, as inmates were to have access to the monitor, keyboard and mouse, The computer hardware however, was to be located within the management facilities, out of reach from its users.

‘Remote management was a crucial component of the installation,’ Mr Shaw explained. ‘Our team needed to ensure that all components were solid and reliable, and that the authorities have full control over the workstations.

‘We integrated all of the Gefen components into the facility’s IP network infrastructure, eliminating the need for new wiring and a separate network, while guaranteeing scalability.’ Mr Shaw continued. ‘Computers and workstations can be added at any time by installing additional Gefen senders and receivers.’

The Gefen senders and receivers use standard Cat-5 cables to interface with the facility’s LAN, with the sender’s DVI local output feature making it possible to locally monitor video routed to each cell. Network security was also key to this project, and was ensured with the use of Gefen’s built-in signal encryption to prevent interception from any unauthorised parties.

‘The correctional facility’s authorities are now successfully providing controlled educational and recreational programs for their inmates.’ Mr Shaw concluded. ‘Cutting-edge A/V distribution technologies, such as this one from Gefen, make these constructive and forward-looking projects possible.’
