Avid’s shared storage gets smarter
Avid is claiming an industry first with the release of new software-defined shared storage platform specially designed for media management and storage. Powered by its MediaCentral Platform, Avid Nexis is a fully-virtualised platform that allows media organisations to adjust storage capacity mid-project and reportedly without disrupting workflows. According to company CEO Louis Hernandez Jr, ‘the platform allows customers to share and access media assets reliably from anywhere without overinvesting in infrastructure’. The solution is stated to work with all top media creation applications, including Media Composer, Pro Tools, Apple Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro and Grass Valley Edius.
The Nexis family includes several storage engine options designed to meet all scalability and density requirements. This includes the Nexis E4 high-density integrated storage engine, the Nexis E2 small-footprint storage engine and the Nexis Pro professional-class storage engine which the manufacturer bills as an easy upgrade path for Isis 1000 users.
Storage capacity for the units varies from 20Tb to 60Tb depending on the configuration of media drives selected. However, additional storage capacity can be added to any of the E-Class engines with the Media Pack package of 10 media drives. The series’ 2U System Director Application unit increases the scale and redundancy be supporting the integration of five or more Media Packs (50 drives) across all networked engines.
