Bieber in Mumbai

INDIA: En route from Dubai to South Africa, Justin Bieber’s Purpose World Tour stopped in Mumbai for a performance at the DY Patil Stadium. Sound.com and Star Dimension partnered to provide the production crew, while Harman Professional India offered system engineering support for the mammoth A/V and lighting setup.

‘Working on a project this scale with one of the top touring artists presents its own set of challenges,’ said Sunil Karanjikar, application engineer at Harman Professional India. ‘The sheer size of the venue calls for a lot of precision as an error of a couple of degrees in the aiming of the arrays can put huge amounts of the audience out of the coverage area. Also, the fact that Mumbai is extremely hot at that time of the year meant that the crew could only work through the night to execute this project. Although the PA design and positions were marked in CAD, we realised elements such as scaffolding for the screens had changed since the original design. So we had to quickly re-map PA positions to ensure we were still getting the intended coverage.’

The PA setup was formed from 64 JBL VTX V25-II line array elements as the main L-R system, accompanied by 24 flown S28 subwoofers and 36 ground stacked G28s, while front-fill was catered for 24 VTX V20s. For delays throughout the venue, 54 VT4889 cabinets were deployed. Power for the entire setup drew on 172 Crown iTech12000HD amplifiers.

‘With 214 VTX and Vertec loudspeakers and 170 ITech HD amplifiers used on the project, we had to design a robust and redundant network system to control the system, keeping in mind the extreme heat during the day and time of the event,’ said Mr Karanjikar. ‘The production quality was top notch with a great display of lighting and pyrotechnics. Ken Van Druten is one of the best mix engineers on the circuit today and he ensured that the audio system was used to the maximum with some brilliant dynamics throughout the concert.’

On the lighting side, Nick Van Nostrand’s design utilised 132 Martin Mac Aura XBs, 32 LED Atomic 3000s and 32 Mac Quantum Washes from Star Dimensions’ inventory. ‘Nick Van Nostrand had mostly worked with Martin Professional lighting on the Purpose Tour and was very happy with the fixture options we offered,’ said Ashish Mehta of Star Dimensions. ‘It was a large setup and Martin lighting fixtures worked flawlessly even in soaring temperatures.’
