Broadcast Asia draws the crowds at Suntec City
SINGAPORE: Broadcast Asia opened its doors on Tuesday under the ConnecTechAsia umbrella. The newly-created brand also encompasses CommunicAsia as well as NXTAsia, a new division to spotlight emerging technologies.
Not only has Broadcast Asia returned to the recently-refurbished Suntec City this year, leaving more space for the other events over at Marina Bay Sands, the show now runs for three days instead of the previous four. Maybe this was the reason for the queues of eager attendees lining up at the registration counters of both venues on the first morning as the shows got off to a flying start. And there was plenty for visitors to see, as 18,000 exhibitors from 62 countries revealed their latest technology in the combined exhibition space of 65,000m2.
Proceedings were officially launched by Lindy Wee, chief executive of show organiser UBM SES, who explained that the division of the shows was down to the proliferation of technology’s impact on industry and society. Identifying key themes of 2017 as being the Internet of Things, cyber-security, artificial intelligence, robotics, the cloud and virtual reality, Ms Wee cited one of the biggest challenges facing the broadcast industry in Asia today as being the transition to IP. Accordingly, the Broadcast IP Inter-Op lab has been introduced this year at Suntec City, giving participants hands-on experience of an IP workflow.
Ms Wee welcomed Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, minister for communications and information, to the podium to deliver the keynote speech. ‘Here, I get to interact with people and experience Infocomm Media technologies that have the potential to power Singapore into its next phase of growth,’ he said. ‘My ministry is driving a national effort to nurture a digital society where all Singaporeans have access to technology, understand it, and benefit from using technology in their everyday lives.’
Broadcast Asia is this year being held under the theme of ‘Imagination Unbound’, reflecting the changing ways in which people are consuming media. And the coming days at Suntec City will reveal the technologies that are being developed to facilitate these changes.
It’s been clear from the opening days of Broadcast Asia that the show reflects a market that is on the cusp of new developments and possibilities. ‘What our industry is all about is trying to capture audiences, and whether it’s via immersive audio, high dynamic range vision or virtual reality, it’s all about telling a story,’ said Daniel Lovell, audio product specialist at Avid. ‘We’re really lucky that we’re in a time where large companies are developing platforms that are places for that technology to go, that people can access on their phones, tablets and laptops. It’s about having the tools to tell a great story and it’s a really exciting time to be in the industry.’
