Crowds improve as Musik Messe opens

WORLD: Day two of Frankfurt Prolight & Sound saw a much improved number of visitors and a busier show floor as Musik Messe opened its doors. While exhibitors will be pleased with the increased footfall, it questions whether the organiser was correct to split the two shows in the first place.

For the increased crowd who ventured to Frankfurt there were plenty of new product launches to see. The likes of Coda Audio, Audio Precision and Optocore all unveiled new equipment on day two to join the plethora of gear which was launched on the first day.

As previously reported DPA Microphones, DiGiCo, Stagetec, SSL, Yamaha, K-array and Funktion One all have new introductions on show. While Adam Hall brand LD Systems, Adamson, L-Acoustics, Outline, Beyma and Faital all had their fair share of new releases on display. Most notable of all was Martin Audio, which has no fewer than 10 new products on its booth.

Some companies have also introduced new personnel. d&b audiotechnik was proud to announce that after a previous tenure with the company, former Sydney Opera House stalwart David Claringbold has joined as chief marketing officer. Jeff Rocha has left EAW for L’Acoustics, DiGiCo welcomed Austin Freshwater as general manager while DPA’s new CEO, Kalle Hvidt Neilson, participated in his first PL&S.

Most of the action was still taking place in Hall 3.1 on day two, where the bulk of the pro audio contingent was concentrated. However, even this busiest of halls had aisles that appeared wider between the stands in comparison to previous years.

Notable by their absence were several long-term PL&S exhibitors, and not just long distance ones such as Meyer Sound and Genelec. Local German companies including Sennheiser, Electro-Voice, H K Audio and Eve Audio also decided to stay away, despite the show being on home turf.

Despite a better second day, opinions remain divided about the show’s ongoing relevance. There has been evidence in recent years that ISE is taking much of Frankfurt’s prowess, and this year the difference between the two was starker than ever. Day two, has proven there is still a demand for the show, particularly on the lighting side of the industry. The challenge for the organiser is to make every day worthwhile for the exhibitors.

PL&S continues at the Frankfurt Messe until Friday 7 April, with Musik Messe until Saturday 8 April.
