dBTechnologies goes large with Vio
Targeting larger sound reinforcement applications, Italian manufacturer dBTechnologies has developed the Vio L210 powered line array. The two-way active system comprises dual 10-inch neodymium woofers positioned in a V form with a titanium dome 3-inch neodymium compression driver.
The transducer’s copper voice coils are coated in aluminium which, according to the manufacturer, provides ‘extra resistance to high stress conditions whilst providing an accurate transient response with an extended low-end reproduction’. A single 3-inch voice coil compression driver with a 1.4-inch exit throat is attached to a waveguide to create a cylindrical wavefront. Two large aluminium phase plugs are located in front of both woofers, allowing their external surface to protrude beyond the constant directivity high-frequency waveguide. Each phase plug features 26 diamond-shaped holes aimed at reducing any interference between the two LF emission points while reportedly improving frequency and transient response.
Housed within the bass reflex wooden enclosure, a Class-D Digipro G3 900W amplifier module provides sufficient power to the electroacoustic components to allow the speaker to achieve a maximum SPL of 135dB. Up to 10 Vio L210 modules can be inter-connected on a single 220V line. The manufacturer also claims that the DSP with FIR filters and digital optical isolation ensures coherent coverage over long distances and clear audio performance respectively.
Setting up the Vio L210 has been simplified by integrating a three-point rigging system for which the front links connect the modules from every angle. The rear central rigging strand is equipped with a hook type link to set the relative splay angles determined via the dBTechnologies Composer prediction software. The rigging strand automatically blocks the systems at the preset angles whenever the array is hoisted. Furthermore, splay angles can be set directly within the dedicated DT-VIOL210 transport cart housing four modules. The DRK 210 flying frame comes with two hooks that provide an accurate inclination of the array, but it additionally serves as a groundstacking accessory to secure Vio L210 cabinets on a Vio S318 subwoofer. The DT-318 can transport up to three subwoofers both on wheels or on a lift track, although wheels can be mounted on the rear side of the cabinet as an alternative.
Extending the lower frequencies, the Vio S318 subwoofer consists of three 18-inch bass reflex half-horn loaded woofers. These have been configured to maximise frontal emission, for which the voice coils are aligned in order to achieve a perfect phase response. Powered by three Digipro G3 amplifiers, the Vio S318 can produce a maximum SPL of 143dB. An integrated delay module goes up to a 9.9ms delay in 0.5ms steps and the crossover module sets the low pass filter along with the high pass filter for an integrated crossover output. In addition, the system also features attenuation control, a polarity switch and an RDnet port for remote control. Equipped with five handles, the Vio S318 is housed in reinforced multiplex and finished in polyurea.
