Lawo offers control at ZRTG’s new facility

CHINA: A wide variety of Lawo systems have been installed across Zhejiang Radio and Television Group’s (ZRTG) newly built production facility, Zhejiang International TV Center. The site comprises a 42-storey main building that houses multiple TV studios, with additional studios for music and film production. The complex relies on Ravenna to distribute digital audio, which is controlled and monitored by Lawo’s Virtual Studio Manager (VSM) software, making it the first fully networked broadcast facility in China.

ZRTG operates 12 television channels and eight radio channels and has is an existing Lawo customer, having equipped its other facilities with the German manufacturer’s wares. At the Zhejiang International TV Center a pair of studio networks are already in use. The main studio network is formed of four large studios, one 2,500m², one 1,200m² and two at 600m². A centrally installed Lawo Nova73 routing system and video routing systems controlled and monitored by VSM connects these studios across the network. Four 56-fader mc²66 consoles have been installed in each studio’s control room. In addition, access is provided from each studio control room to 10 Dallis stageboxes that have been centrally installed and redundantly connected to a Nova73 router via Ravenna, meaning that no local stageboxes are required.

The control room for Studio A is 600m² in itself and also serves as the control room for a smaller 200m² studio in which bands play, mixed using Pro Tools HDX and Pyramix DAWs. A 56-fader mc²66 console enables control of both DAWs’ virtual faders simultaneously, while a Waves SoundGrid system has been deployed as a mobile solution it can be used in the other studios when required.

During production of the recent series of Sing China, the broadcaster made use of three of the four studios on the network; one for multitrack recording and final mixing, another for live music mixing and the third as a full back-up. The Nova73 router also provided microphone management, while a GUI in each mc²66 defined which console had the control rights for particular mic preamps on each card.

ZRTG’s Home Shopping Channel, meanwhile, makes use of one of the 600m² studios, as well as a 250m² one. These are both installed with a 40-fader mc²36 console and a Nova37 router between them that shares the wireless microphone and de-embedded signals.

In addition to kitting out its International TV Center, ZRTG has also purchased an mc²66 and two mc²56 mixing desks for its new 4K OB van and audio truck, currently under construction in the Netherlands and due to hit the road in 2018.
