Mozart! gains spatial awareness

Published: ASIA

CHINA: German production company, La Belle Musical, recently brought its musical Mozart! to Shanghai Culture Square with a spatial sound design developed by Swiss designer Tom Strebel of audiopool. To meet such a specification, Feedback Show Systems of Germany acquired and delivered an Outboard TiMax SoundHub audio delay-matrix processor.

The TiMax solution allowed for the reinforcement of all actors using radio microphones over a multi-channel distributed speaker system. The theatre’s main house PA system, comprising 24 JBL line array cabinets in an L-R configuration, played back the band and music mix. For vocals, Mr Strebel specified the use of three L-Acoustics Arcs Wide as point source at the proscenium. Providing support for additional vocal elements were eight Turbosound TFH 600H cabinets. Completing the setup were a pair of L-Acoustics X12s as out-fills, three X8 units as under balcony delays and four front-fills.

‘I have used TiMax for almost every production since 2006 when I did the sound design for Basel Tattoo,’ Mr Strebel revealed. ‘When everything is set correctly the final result is absolutely pure and natural. No unwanted delays and echoes and everything in place. It is very important for me, that in all of the seats in a theatre you hear the actor from where he actually is on stage; so you hear a voice where it is generated instead of coming out of a loudspeaker. This can only be achieved by an active level/time matrix.’
