Raising the SPL at Privé’s latest outlet
SINGAPORE: Rather than rest on their laurels of success, the Privé Group – which includes the Bang Bang nightclub and Roadhouse – continues to expand its portfolio of high class restaurants and F&B outlets throughout Singapore. A fifth outlet of Privé was recently opened in at the entrance of Wheelock Place at the junction of Orchard and Scotts Road. The alfresco all-day drinking and dining venue is in a prime location, which has further extended its appeal by installing a zoned BGM system that raises the SPL as the day progresses.
‘Whereas some of our higher energy outlets host live bands and DJs, Privé simply soothes diners and drinkers with a good BGM system,’ explained Privé Group chairman Yuan Oeij. ‘We take a holistic approach in everything we do and pay attention to detail so that we can target the right customers to our venues. Rather than disguise our sound system, we like to display the fixed loudspeakers above and provide managed distribution via a Spotify source on a laptop. The tables nearer the bar therefore have a slightly higher SPL than those nearer the street. Naturally, we don’t want complaints from neighbouring businesses or passers by.’
As with the previous Privé outlets, Valentines Music Centre was commissioned to supply and install the audio system at Wheelock Place. A selection of DAS Audio Action 12 and Action 8 cabinets are suspended on brackets from the 4.2m height ceiling. The compact, active Action 8 and Action12 cabinets incorporate 360W and 500W continuous Class-D amplifiers and operate down to 60Hz and 50Hz (-10dB) respectively. Furthermore, being an open-air venue, the 50-degrees x 80-degrees and 80-degrees x 80-degrees dispersion characteristics ensure the audio is contained largely on the premises with little spillage. The lower frequencies have been extended to 44Hz (-10dB) with the addition of two EAW SB120Z 12-inch subwoofers attached to a rising pillar. Powered by three QSC GX7 amplifiers located under the register, the SB120z models have been custom finished in marine blue to match the interior décor.
Zone control, DSP settings and speaker management control is provided courtesy of an 8-input / 8-output Symetrix Jupiter 8 processor. Zone configuration, volume control and other functionality are controlled from the Arc-Web browser interface on the laptop. ‘The vibe at Wheelock Place is chill out music and with this DAS Audio system, our diners relax and enjoy the ambience without having to raise their voices,’ furthers Mr Oeij. ‘We always add subwoofers to enhance the vibrancy and these SB120z are just right for this atmosphere, whilst the Symetrix DSP control makes our lives easier allowing us to concentrate on running the restaurant.’
