Real-time tracking brings National Day celebrations to life
SINGAPORE: Over 50,000 spectators attended the National Day Parade (NDP) at the National Stadium for Singapore’s 51st National Day. The country’s birthday celebrations were highlighted by a visually captivating projection-mapping performance enabled by 66 Christie Boxer 4K30 3DLP projectors. Hexogon Solution Pte Ltd, the manufacturer’s rental staging partner across Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, Japan and Taiwan, designed and implemented the projection mapping display, which marked the Boxer 4K30's debut in the National Stadium and was reportedly the largest projection mapping performance ever to be tracked in real-time.
Hexogon Solution, which has worked on previous NDPs, deployed the 66 Boxer 4K30 projectors around the entire stadium on the fourth level. Aimed high, the real-time projections were mapped on to the fabric surfaces of two moving structures that resembled a giant boulder and a city in the sky.
‘This was the first real-time tracking projection mapping on 3D objects at the NDP,’ noted Adrian Goh, group managing director of Hexogon Solution. ‘There were 40 tracking cameras around the entire stadium and 260 tracking beacons were installed onto the boulder and the 3D Sky City, to enable the system to accurately track and map the visuals provided by the committee onto all surfaces as the objects moved. The giant boulder would eventually be split into eight pieces and travel in different directions, while the 3D Sky City would be hoisted from stage level to a height of 35m during the parade’s finale.’
The Hexogon Solution team has enjoyed similarly impressive accomplishments in the past, such as when it set the Guinness World Record for greatest light output in a projected image at last year’s Southeast Asian Games. However, a rather unique obstacle presented itself at this year’s NDP. ‘We had to map onto empty space without the actual objects in the initial stage, leaving less than a week for actual mapping onto the complex structures after they were installed,’ recalled Mr Goh. ‘In addition, we had to deal with the random movements of the fabric structures due to wind conditions, whilst executing and rendering the content in real-time on the uneven and deformed surfaces.’
Hexogon Soluton was reportedly able to overcome these challenges due to the Boxer 4K30. ‘The Christie Boxer 4K30 is easy to handle and it allows us to spread the projected image without compromising the result,’ explained Mr Goh. ‘With strong features such as 4K resolution, 30,000 lumens, a significantly smaller footprint and omnidirectional capability, it was a breeze to position the projectors in different angles to cover the whole Sky City structure.’
The parade was hailed a success, with the projection mapping complementing the 3,500 performers onstage, fireworks and an assortment of props. ‘As one of the most prominent rental stagers in the region, Hexogon Solution is continually improving its capabilities and know-how to deliver spectacular and truly memorable visual experiences,’ Christie Asia Pacific vice president, Lin Yu commented. ‘I’m delighted that our Boxer 4K30 projectors had played an important role in the staging of the largest ever real-time tracking projection mapping performance at this year’s National Day Parade in Singapore. I congratulate Adrian for delivering a fantastic show to mark Singapore’s 51st birthday!’
‘The projection mapping performance planned and executed by Hexogon Solution has always been a major highlight of Singapore’s NDP,’ concluded Han Kim, general ganager, Christie Singapore. ‘This year, Adrian and his team had gone one step further by incorporating projection mapping with real-time tracking technology using our Boxer 4K30 projectors. The impressive projections on the gigantic boulder and 3D Sky City structures had certainly made this year’s NDP all the more memorable.’
