SARA to once again partner with US-based UniverSoul Circus
SOUTH AFRICA: Freddie Nyathela, president of the South Africa Roadies Association (SARA), recently met with Cedric Walker, president of UniverSoul Circus, at the Melrose Arch in Johannesburg. UniverSoul Circus is a single ring circus show founded by Mr Walker in 1994 that comprises 75 performers and 12 acts that tours the USA. The topic of conversation at the meeting concerned the possible opportunities for young South Africans to travel to America and join the touring technical and production crew for 10 months in 2017.
A working relationship between SARA and UniverSoul Circus began in 2002, and for seven years saw 121 South African production engineers join the travelling circus for 10-month periods, gaining valuable experience while being paid. This on-the-job experience covered lighting, sound, staging, audio and video production. In 2008, the programme ended due to logistical issues, however SARA has confirmed its resurrection, which the organisation states will be ‘life changing for those who make the grade’.
