ShowTex reaches for the stars with Sky City
SINGAPORE: ShowTex has provided its services in building a Sky City for the Singapore National Day Parade (NDP). The theme for 2016 was ‘building our Singapore of tomorrow’ and was inspired by the region’s armoured regiment. The Sky City itself served as a representation of the future developments of Singapore.
Sky City was made up of 15 buildings, supplied by ShowTex Hong Kong (HK). Ten of these were described as futuristic, measuring 35m high. The additional five buildings illustrated existing landmarks of the Singapore skyline, with each having a footprint of approximately 5 sq-m.
The large-scale project was given 12 weeks for design, engineering and manufacturing and the building could not weigh more than 400kg, as this was the limit of the fly system for each winch. Every component had to be designed to be as lightweight as possible and as a result, ShowTex HK worked with lightweight aluminium frames and glass fibre rods to reduce the structural weight for each building.
The buildings were stored in giant carts and were pushed onto stage, and were attached to a large steel ring which was hooked into the fly system by the performers. The illusion of the city appearing on stage required deployment of the entire structure in only a couple of minutes, and had to be almost invisible to the audience. Moreover, the buildings were collapsible to 70cm and were then deployed to a height of over 35m.
ShowTex HK used PolyStretch P8 CS Matt for 70 per cent of the buildings included in the Sky City. The material was stretchable and flame retardant, and fitted the company’s need for a strong, wrinkle free solution. It was given a custom grey colour, chosen specifically to absorb the projected light and to hide the dirt from eight weeks delivery and rehearsal.
The company also chose to use Universal Stretch print fabric. This was used to print very specific patterns that were incorporated into the design of the buildings. In addition, the colour of the print was matched to the custom dyed grey of the PolyStretch, allow complimenting colour tones.
