Airtel Digital TV installs a Harmonic solution

INDIA: Airtel Digital TV has integrated a Harmonic compression headend solution as it seeks to improve the viewing experience for its HD customers. The manufacturer’s system is designed to be a scalable and HEVC upgradeable infrastructure that will reportedly enable the Bharti Airtel owned direct-broadcast satellite service provider to increase its bandwidth efficiency and improve video quality, while saving on operating costs.

The solution has been built on a foundation of Harmonic Electra X2 media processors, which are powered by the Pure Compression Engine. ProStream 9100 stream processors have been integrated with the Electra X2 units, as has the ProView 7100 IRD. The setup is controlled via Harmonic’s NMX video network management solution.

This installation will reportedly allow Airtel Digital TV to expand its direct-to-home HD offering to more than 50 channels. ‘Our best-in-class video infrastructure solutions help customers like Airtel Digital TV reduce OPEX and drive new business growth by simplifying the launch of additional HD channels,’ explained Harmonic general manager, India, Dan Taylor. ‘Harmonic's compression solution allows Airtel Digital TV to deliver superior video quality at low bit rates while adapting to next-generation video compression standards such as HEVC.’
