APG Asia skates into The Rink

SINGAPORE: Local supplier APG Asia Pte Ltd was recently called upon to provide a pair of SC25 Sector series loudspeakers to help tackle speech intelligibility and sound leakage issues at The Rink.
The Rink is Singapore's first and only Olympic-size ice skating rink, created for hosting events and activities such as recreational ice skating. The collaboration between the Singapore Sports Council and CapitaMalls Asia Ltd is designed to encourage the integrations of community or sports facilities in private commercial developments for mutual benefit. As part of the scheme, The Rink best serves the general public as it is a non-profit operating model, whereby all revenue generated is re-invested into the operation and programming aspects of the facility. Located on level three, The Rink includes a 460-seat gallery and surrounding rink-side dining restaurants, hosting nights of dance tunes and discotheques at the weekends.
Located in the very heart of the mall, The Rink presents itself as a challenging acoustic venue when sound reinforcement is required. The loudspeaker system integrated into the initial design was not only spilling out to the surrounding retail and F&B outlets, but was also providing poor speech intelligibility as a result of reverberation and distortion.
The newly-installed SC28 column speakers are designed to operate as line-sources, providing high-precision mid-and-high frequency reproduction where harsh acoustics need to be overcome. The vertical array of the SC25 combines six Isotop7 drivers, which can provide vertical coverage of 20 degrees at high frequencies and 30 degrees in the vocal bandwidth within a 250Hz to 19kHz frequency range over 100m distance. The models passed the demonstration and have been installed onto customised ceiling hanging brackets at either end of The Rink firing inwards. The weatherproofed ratings of the SC25 speakers are a further benefit in a high humidity environment.
Additionally, a pair of TB215S subwoofers have been affixed to adjacent rising columns to supplement the lower frequencies when required. A pair of APG SA30:2 amplifiers powers the system, whilst digital speaker management is controlled by an APG DMS26 processor.
The new APG SC25 system has boosted speech intelligibility, whilst improving the bass response during events. Whilst the skaters enjoy the improved sound reinforcement, the adjacent retailers are benefiting from the audio containment on ice with little spillage to their spaces.
