‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ relies on Media Composer for mass media management

INDIA: Avid’s Media Composer platform played a central role in the postproduction of S.S. Rajamouli’s latest film, Baahubali: The Beginning, a two-part drama narrating the dispute between brothers Baahubali and Bhallaladeva as they fight for the throne to the Mahishmathi Kingdom.

One of the biggest challenges for the production team was reportedly managing the large amount of media acquired. ‘I worked as associate director for this movie and handled the key workflows for postproduction, including the technical aspects of both offline and online editing,’ offered associate director and technical lead, Sreenivasarao Mamillapalli. ‘We had four Media Composers working 24/7 for around 600 days, with over 16Tb of storage allocated to each of the systems. The final master output was 13Tb with an Avid bin size of 6Gb. It was great to be involved in this project and to work closely with the great team we had.’

‘Managing the media was a huge hurdle so we had to split the data into four systems and keep the same for a safe backup,’ furthered editor Venkateswara Rao Kotagiri, who worked on the aesthetics.

Avid editor, Thammiraju, who handled the workflow on the Avid systems adds that ‘we used the DNxHD175 codec to overcome the size of the metadata and not compromise on video quality. We had a minimum of 15 layers of video tracks and seven mono tracks of audio, which were exported as 5.1 audio along with the video for the previews.’

‘I never had the opportunity to attempt such a large-scale project before,’ said the film’s director, Mr Rajamouli. ‘I’m privileged to be working with Arka Media production house, and to be trusted so wholly and freely by my producers. The support received by the AMD team in testing and using their 8100 and 9000 dual D700 cards on the Media Composer system for this project was really appreciated.’
