Concept Audio showcases STM for Malaysia’s ACVMF

MALAYSIA: As co-sponsor alongside Nexo, Shure and Pioneer DJ for the recent Asian Cultural Village Music Festival (ACVMF) in Sunway Surf Beach at Sunway Lagoon, Concept Audio was responsible for providing complete sound coverage and reinforcement for the 12,000 people in attendance. In total, the company deployed more than 150 Nexo STM cabinets to power the event.

Organised by Unipix, the festival combines both national and international artists with headline performances from Paris Hilton, Havana Brown, Sky Blu, Leng Yein, DJ Soda and Shure ambassador for Concept Audio, Dato AC Mizal.

Due to the large size and shape of the venue, the Nexo system deployed consisted of main left-right hangs of 15 STM M46 main, 15 B112 bass and one M28 element for downfill. A further two hangs consisted of six S118 sub modules, while outfill hangs comprising six M28, three M46 and three B112 were deployed at the extent of the stage. Additionally, a groundstacked subwoofer system comprising four stacks of six S118 cabinets in W cardioid mode augmented the low end. Power for the entire system was from 17 Nuar universal amplifier racks.

The stage was designed to accommodate two DJ sets, one on the floor for the opening DJ, and another elevated one for headline acts – meaning multiple monitoring systems needed to be deployed. There was also a normal stage area for dancers and rappers that required stage side fill for monitoring, as well as a catwalk, used mainly by Paris Hilton and Sky Blu, which also required dedicated monitoring. Nexo 45N12 cabinets were selected for stage fill, with two arrays of three boxes each reportedly providing wide stage coverage, while STM cabinets were again chosen for the monitoring systems. The team built six stacks of two M46 main modules and one S118 sub to cover all of the necessary positions. DJ equipment on stage was exclusively Pioneer and comprised DJM-900 and DJM-900 Nexus mixers and CDJ-2000 and CDJ-2000 Nexus turntables.

Nexo system engineer, Mark Bollenberg, was on-site during setup and used the Nexo NS-1 configuration and simulation tool to determine the best speaker placement and angles for the whole system. ‘We would like to showcase the capability of Nexo STM, that it can perform very well in all kinds of big or small shows, including ACVMF,’ offered Nexo Asia sales manager, Nicolas Kirsch.

Following deployment of the sound system, the Concept Audio team installed a comprehensive microphone setup comprising 14 channels of Shure’s ULX-D wireless system and four PSM1000 IEMs. Concept Audio’s certified Shure engineer, Mo Ket Seong, noted that as soon as the stage LEDs were switched on, RF noise on stage rose from -100dBm to -90dBm.

The company states that usually the gain setting of the antenna would be set to at least +6dBm to compensate for the noise. However, in this instance, the team used the Shure Wireless Workbench 6 software, which through wide-band frequency scanning, spectrum analysis and individual control of every microphone channel, overcame the interference.
