Coopers Malthouse upgrades L-Acoustics system

AUSTRALIA: Happy with the performance of its old audio system which incorporated L-Acoustics MTD coaxial loudspeakers, The Coopers Malthouse has opted for a technical upgrade to the French manufacturer's X Series. The Melbourne-based theatre reportedly becomes the first venue in Australia to adopt a full X Series integration.
‘The new L-Acoustics X Series loudspeakers caught our eye, given their size, weight and the fact that they satisfied all our criteria,’ explained technical manager Baird McKenna of the Malthouse Theatre. ‘We were a little nervous at first, because they are a new range and this was possibly the first theatre installation in the world to use them, but the fantastic reliability of the previous L-Acoustics system gave us the confidence that they were the right choice.’
The Malthouse plays host to a variety of differing events, from musicals to conferences and is operated as a non-profit organisation. This meant that budgetary restraints were a consideration in which system to opt for, as well as the flexibility required for a range of events with altering seating arrangements. With three theatres, rehearsal studios, meeting rooms, a bar and a café, the new system also needed to possess the ability to be reconfigured.
Norwest Productions was engaged as the integrator for the project, having maintained a long-term relationship with the venue while possessing an expertise of L-Acoustics systems. Eight L-Acoustics X12 coaxial loudspeakers, four X8 delays, six 5XTs alongside two SB15M subs, and two SB18M subs formed the new system, which was provided by Australian distributor, Hills Limited.
MTD subs from the previous system were integrated with the new system, while the system is powered and controlled by five LA4X amplified controllers. ‘We worked closely with L-Acoustics to meet the deadline,’ added Gerry Gavros, brand manager at Hills Limited. ‘It was one of these rare projects where everything fell into place.’
‘Our sound operators are over the moon and find the system a joy to work with,’ concluded Mr McKenna. ‘The X Series delivers clear vocal clarity throughout each of the theatres and is consistent across all audience areas. There is also amazing tonal consistency across the X12, X8 and 5XT which all work beautifully together.’
