JBL line array goes to the beach with Sydney surf festival

AUSTRALIA: The Red Bull Junior Surf Pro festival – held on Cronulla beach near Sydney – saw a JBL VRX compact line array recently provide front of house sound for a variety of artists including live bands and DJs.

Supplied by local rental company EventSound, the system comprised six flown VRX932LAP enclosures plus two VRX918 subwoofers, while a further pair of VRX932LAP boxes were used as ground fill on top of four per-side VRX 918 subwoofers. On stage sound was delivered by 10 JBL SRX 712M monitors with side-fills and drum-fills all powered by Crown XTI 4000 amplifiers. Soundcraft GB Series mixing consoles were used at both the FOH and monitor mixing positions, while all radio microphones were Shure UHF-R series.

‘We needed a sound system with a good throw distance as we needed to get even coverage down the beach,’ explained EventSound managing director Keith Clarkson. ‘The JBL VRX system was perfect for this. Since we’ve purchased the JBL VRX we have found its versatility to be great and this was one of the occasions where we put it to task as a large scale concert box.’

The Red Bull concert followed a string of events in and around the Sydney area in which EventSound used similar JBL VRX configurations, including the Sydney Running Festival, Jazz in the Gardens and Prince William at the Block.
