CHINA: Loudspeaker manufacturer LAX has completed its preparations for the opening ceremony of the 16th Asian Games, or XVI Asiad, which is set to take place on November 12th on Guangzhou’s Haixinsha Island. The news follows a year of intensive construction on the island, which as recently as last September bore no infrastructure including water and electricity.
Guangzhou was chosen as the host for the 16th Asian Games in 2004 following the withdrawal of other contenders including Seoul and Kuala Lumpur. The event is expected to be the biggest Asian Games thus far, drawing athletes from across the region to compete in 476 events in 42 sports.
LAX was chosen as the exclusive loudspeaker provider for the entire Games following its close collaboration with the Olympic Council of Asia for the 2004 Games in Doha, and its work on the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The manufacturer reports that it has supplied sound reinforcement systems to as many as 82 venues, while 300 sound engineers will be sent to the Games to maintain the installations during the competition.
As for the construction of Haixinsha Island, the manufacturer reports that its efforts to meet the one-year deadline for the opening ceremony saw its design and installation team regularly working 16 hours a day without weekends or holidays. The ceremony will be directed by Chen Weiya, the assistant director of the opening ceremony for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
