Lingdong launch streamed via BlackMagic

CHINA: Huangyi Photography and Videography Services put to use Blackmagic Design’s Atem M/E Production Studio 4K switcher during the live production of Beijing Hyundai’s Lingdong launch event. The Singapore-based solutions company provided a live feed of the event from the Shanghai Expo Center to Chinese video streaming sites such as LeTV, Tencent Video, iQiyi and Youku.

Beijing Hyundai, a joint venture between the Hyundai Motor Company and Beijing Motor Group, hosted the event as it released its Elantra Lingdong, a model of car it has designed for the Chinese market. The Atem 1 M/E Production Studio 4K reportedly managed the live feeds from eight cameras. Four fixed cameras, as well as a roaming camera, were all connected to the switcher by way of an SDI. Meanwhile, wireless transmitters connected two cameras that were on jibs and a Steadicam.

The show featured presentations from executives and Beijing Hyundai’s celebrity spokesperson, Hu Ge, as well as performance art pieces, with the feed switching between live video and pre-recorded segments. The live programme was mixed with pre-recorded presentation slides, computer graphics and clips once the output from the Atem 1 M/E Production Studio 4K was sent to another switcher. From there, an auxiliary output was sent to a Mini Converter SDI Distribution 4K, which distributed the signal to the webcaster’s systems.

‘The Atem 1 M/E Production Studio 4K has the reliability required for serious live production,’ noted the event’s technical director, Xueqing Wang. ‘It ran some 10 hours without stopping two days straight for rehearsals and when the show was on, it worked without a glitch. The Atem switcher is also easy to use with all its features at my fingertip, while the audio signal going to the Atem from the external mixer could be embedded in the SDI outputs, eliminating the need for external audio embedding devices.’

LeTV also utilised a 4K EFP system comprising Blackmagic Ultra HD products, such as the Atem switcher, Teranex Express and HyperDeck Studio Pro, to stream live VR content from the event. A VR rig sent eight camera feeds to a stitching station that was equipped with a DeckLink SDI 4K, producing a stitched 360 VR 4K video output that was transported via a couple of Mini Converter Optical Fibre 4Ks to an Atem 1 M/E Production Studio 4K. LeTV’s logo was then superimposed over the 360-degree video, which was then sent to a Terenex Express processor, down converting the signal from 4K to HD before it streamed online, whilst the HyperDeck Studio Pro SSD recorder recorded the 4K signal from the Atem switcher.
