Mercoms Systems divides or unites at Sunway Resort’s Grand Lagoon Ballroom

MALAYSIA: A Renkus-Heinz sound system has been installed to cater for up to 2,000 guests as part of a recent upgrade at the Grand Lagoon Ballroom at Malaysia’s Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa. The new system was required to individually serve three areas into which the room is regularly sub divided, as well as delivering ‘first-class sound’ when the rooms were united. For system designer and distributor Mercoms Systems Sdn Bhd, the solution of choice was CFX-series loudspeakers from Renkus-Heinz – selected for the ability to ‘throw clear sound to the rear’ while maintaining intelligibility. The Installation was carried out by Mega Teknik Sdn Bhn.

The luxurious hotel is located roughly 14.5km southwest of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, and is part of a huge complex along the Sunway Lagoon. Keith Tan from Mercoms Systems explained that the ballroom’s ceiling is ‘at least 7m high and the walls are mostly made of wood frames with some soft cloth-wrapped padding in the middle, glass mirrors at the top and carpeted floor. So although the ballroom has some glass surfaces, it also has absorptive surfaces, and there are no pillars. But the depth of the ballroom was a challenge. It was vital to be able to throw clear sound all the way to the rear while achieving relatively even coverage. That made the CFX series an obvious choice.’

In Ballroom 2 – the middle ballroom which also houses a stage, Mr Tan flew left-right arrays each comprising four CFX-101LA modular point source cabinets, arrayed to provide a 90- by 60-degree coverage pattern, and two CFX15S subwoofers. This set up reportedly provides the ‘performance and pattern control of a line array with the clarity of a point-source system’, and enabled Mr Tan to cover the room with nearly half the number of cabinets required with a traditional line array.

When partitioned, each of the two smaller, adjacent ballrooms are now served by left and right arrays consisting of four CFX-101LA full-range systems and one CFX-15S sub. A Biamp Tesira server provides speaker management, including crossover settings and EQ, and combines the systems when the partitions are open.

‘The Grand Ballroom hosts a wide variety of functions and is a prestigious venue, so the flexibility and quality of the audio system are crucial,’ offered Mr Tan. ‘With CFX-101LAs and CFX-15Ss in all three sub-ballrooms, the system sounds consistently great with the partitions in place and when opened up into a single space. It perfectly complements the layout of the ballroom. System installer Mega Teknik Jaya Sdn Bhd did an excellent job and the Sunway Resort team is delighted with their new Renkus-Heinz system. Now their Grand Lagoon Ballroom truly has a state-of-the-art system that's worthy of it.’
