Pandoras Box shines at i Light Marina Bay 2014

SINGAPORE: Dorier Asia recently used coolux' Pandoras Box projection mapping equipment to produce creative light installations as part of this year’s i Light Marina Bay art festival, a biennial event held in Singapore at the end of March.
Now in its third edition, the festival aimed to delight visitors to the bay whilst at the same time raising awareness of sustainability through 28 specially curated light art installations by local and international artists.
The highlight of the show was the projection mapping installation, which used the ArtScience museum’s landmark architecture as its projection surface. Local artist Justin Lee and Dorier Asia Pacific Pte Ltd were enlisted by event organisers, Pico Art International Pte Ltd, to realise the ambitious project. They opted for two Pandoras Box Quad Server systems used in conjunction with 16 Panasonic PT-DZ21K projectors. Mr Lee provided stencils of his artwork, which the design team then used for creating and compositing a collage of moving imagery and backgrounds reflecting the local area.
One of the first steps for the Dorier Asia team involved conducting a 3D laser measurement scan of the museum’s ‘petal-like’ exterior. The point cloud data was then simplified into a grid and passed on to the content team for use inside Pandoras Box. One of the servers acted as the primary main system with an additional Quad Server used as a full backup. Tactical grade fibre optic cabling and DVI Fibre TX/RX from Lightware were used to connect the system together.
Although the grid was accurate, on site warping via the Pandoras Box was necessary, without which the team would not have been able to accurately calibrate the projectors.
