Powersoft reinforces lectures at Deakin University

AUSTRALIA: InSight Systems has installed two Powersoft X8 amplifiers to drive the Rusden Theatre's EAW setup at Deakin University in Melbourne. The A/V solutions provider has worked with the university for many years and was once again called upon during the recent lecture hall upgrade. The InSight Systems team worked alongside the University’s A/V and networks unit leader, Neil Clarke, and the eSolutions team for the integration, which was completed during the school holidays.
The X8s power an EAW KF720 line source solution and a pair of SB180zP subwoofers that are mounted inside a screen wall, as well as JF10s serving as delays at the back of the 670-seat auditorium. Small format Ecler speakers were also installed as front-fills. The solution was recommended by Ben Clarke, technical support manager at Production Audio Video Technology (PAVT), the company that supplied the equipment.
‘This facility may at any time be required to perform as a performing arts theatre and required a system with adequate headroom for high capacity events,’ PAVT’s Mr Clarke explained. ‘The client has successfully used Powersoft amplification before and since this is the university’s most prestigious theatre, exceptional sound quality was of paramount importance.’
With the line source option selected, Arup was engaged as an acoustic consultant. The line arrays were flown wide, near to the walls, and set high so as to not obscure video from the projectors. The speaker placement required acoustic panelling. ‘This was critical in eliminating the traditional problem with this concept – heavy comb filtering due to heavy reflections from walls right next to line arrays,’ concluded Mr Clarke.
