Sarawak Stadium gets an Audiocenter upgrade

MALAYSIA: At almost 20 years old, Sarawak Stadium in Kuching was in need of a sound system refresh as it geared up to host this year’s Sukma Games. The new system was designed by AV Electronics Marketing (AVEM) and an Audiocenter solution was selected following the success it had experienced in equipping Shah Alam Stadium with the manufacturer’s products. AVEM completed the system design and Ease simulation with Audiocenter engineer, Roshan Malim, while local contractor, Kejuruteraan Daya Maju (KDM), fulfilled the installation.

V-HLA12+ MKII loudspeaker cabinets have been deployed at Sarawak Stadium in clusters of six, with eight clusters flown to provide coverage to the main audience area and another four directed at the side audience areas. The side clusters have been positioned at the edges of the main audience area due to a lack of mounting options available within the venue. Meanwhile, a further four clusters have been positioned towards the field, providing coverage for athletes and staff.

DA2.2 and DA12.2 amplifiers power the system, with the former used for HF and the latter for MF. A DSP processor manages each cluster alongside a Proel PC-260 and Mr Malim used Rational Acoustics’ Smaart 7.5 software platform to analyse the frequencies output by the system. Approximately 650m of fibre optic cabling has also been laid.

The stadium required the solution to distribute 90dB across the audience from front to back, with variance keeping within a 3dB margin. An extra 10dB was allowed for headroom and frequency response was to be linear. Following installation, Audiocenter technicians reported a maximum SPL of 108dB with distribution across all audience areas as uniform.

With the rainforest, sea and Sarawak River all within close proximity, the cabinets were specially treated to withstand the harshest conditions.
