Sennheiser helps make visual art from sound

HONG KONG: Continuing the partnership established last year, Sennheiser once again explored what will ‘shape the future of audio’ at Art Basel in Hong Kong. The German manufacturer used the event to examine the convergence of art and audio, presenting an installation by the musician Sven Meyer. Titled KYMAT, the piece depicts sounds as a visual rendering and forms part of Sennheiser's Future Audio Artists Programme.

The programme was launched by Sennheiser at the beginning of its partnership with Art Basel at the Hong Kong edition last year. It continued at the Miami iteration later in 2016 and at the recent 2017 Hong Kong version. It sees collaboration between the manufacturer and sound artists from around the world. ‘This powerful combination of innovation and imagination drives Sennheiser's vision to shape the future of audio and give listeners new ways to experience sound,’ said Pierre Eloy, managing director, Greater China at Sennheiser Electronic Corporation.

Mr Meyer explained his artwork: ‘In KYMAT, my visual rendering is not the translation of a machine,’ he said. ‘I send a certain frequency into water which creates a shape. The fascination that such an installation evokes can be explained by its capability to make sound visible in an aesthetically striking way.’

Sennheiser also presented attendees at Art Basel with the opportunity take part in listening sessions with its HE-1 headphones.
