SGM lights up Splendour in the Grass

AUSTRALIA: Taking place in Bryon Bay, close to the famous Gold Coast, this year’s Splendour in the Grass festival was illuminated with outdoor, IP65-rated LED fixtures from SGM. Previous year’s festivities have been hampered by unfortunate weather, so event organisers and production managers were resolute with their requirement for a lighting setup capable of withstanding torrential winter rainfall. With weather at this year’s outing that was sure to make the organisers nervous, the SMG fixtures reportedly proved their worth.

The four-day event saw fixtures including the P-5 RGBW wash and Q-7 RGBW flood used at several installs and stage packages across the festival. Supplied by Chameleon Touring Systems, the SGM fixtures were used to creatively enhance a number of the festival’s attractions, including a display by Melbourne-based artist, Sam Songailo, who’s 20m square maze comprising 100 large pillars reportedly drew thousands of visitors at a time.

Entertainment Technology Australia’s Taylor Chadwick was enlisted as lighting designer for the install, in charge of bringing the display to life every evening.

‘Lots of colour, lots of movement and a lighting fixture that was powerful enough to illuminate not just the visible face but also throw light inside and through the 20m display,’ recalled Mr Taylor. ‘Having worked a lot with the SGM P-5, I knew it was the only fixture for the job. High quality RGBW colour mixing, 25,000 lumens output, built-in wireless DMX and of course, IP65 rating.’

The artist was also impressed by the SGM P-5: ‘The size, weight and overall footprint of the P-5 is remarkable when you look at the light it is putting out,’ said Mr Songailo.

The 12 SGM P-5s used for Mr Songailo’s display ‘operated flawlessly over the four-day event despite the heavy rain, mud and some sunshine that they encountered,’ explained the manufacturer.
