Skeldon outfits Illuzion Phuket with Outline

THAILAND: Built recently from the ground up, Illuzion Nightclub in Patong, Phuket has been completely outfitted with an audio system from Italian manufacturer Outline. Billed as the ‘first combined interactive Las Vegas-style show and discothèque in South East Asia’, Illuzion required an audio system capable of supporting any and all types of show. Taking two months to complete, the project was carried out by international installers Skeldon with assistance from the manufacturer throughout the design period.
‘We were looking for a system able to fit the different kinds of events planned within the club – Vegas-style shows, live band performances and DJ sets – while maintaining a high quality of sound and pressure,’ explained Skeldon sound engineer, Federico Susanna. ‘Also the size of the system had to be small enough to not disturb the lights and video equipment. We chose to deploy Outline Butterfly as the main system and Eidos 15 for the VIP areas with DBS 18-2 and Eidos 118 S subs. This turned out to be the perfect choice.’
Ceiling-mounted L-R hangs each comprising eight Butterfly line array elements formed the main dance floor system, with low-end support provided by eight DBS 18-2 subwoofers (both flown and stacked). A total of 40 Eidos 15 with 10 Eidos 118 S subwoofers provide coverage for the venue’s various VIP areas while four DVS 8P point source speakers are used as nearfields for the FOH desk and 20 IS6T provide monitoring in the dressing rooms. The combined systems are powered by four of the manufacturer’s T-Nine amplifiers and four T-Sevens with processing from 10 iP24 iMode-driven processors.
Despite having a blank canvas to work with, the installers encountered a number of challenges related to power that needed to be resolved. ‘The biggest challenge was trying prevent power problems, as the supply in Patong can definitely not be defined as “clean”,’ recalled Mr Susanna. ‘We installed various stabilisers and power factor correctors that were difficult to source in Thailand.’
Having overcome the power concerns, both the installers and client are completely satisfied with the installed system. ‘The final result was impressive. We have created a world-class multipurpose club that has not just met our expectations but has completely exceeded them,’ said Mr Susanna. ‘The customer is fully satisfied with the end result and the musicians and DJs have all commented that it is the best place to perform in Thailand. This has obviously made the customer very happy and in turn makes the venue a prestigious place.
‘Furthermore, Outline assisted me throughout the design period, advising me on the right choices,' he concluded. 'Outline has been a valuable partner with whom I will surely work again.’
