Soundcraft Si1 consoles take to the Sky

AUSTRALIA: A pair of Soundcraft Si1 digital consoles have been supplied to Australia’s Sky Racing, which is described as a world leader in multi-venue, multi-channel race broadcasting.

Sky Racing broadcasts more than 70,000 races each year to viewers in Australia and the rest of the world, boasting premises in the Sydney suburb of Frenchs Forest. The desks are being used in the broadcaster’s newly constructed control room, which is intended primarily for magazine shows but also acts as a redundancy for race day control rooms in the event of a failure. Both of the Soundcraft consoles were supplied by Australian Harman distributor Jands.

‘The main attraction was the Si1’s DSP platform,’ explained Sky Racing projects engineer Hayden Marshall. ‘It means we can recall preloaded shows quickly and turn around magazine shows really fast. Plus if we did have to do our race days from this control room we can just recall a set up and it’s all there ready to go.’

The Si1 has 32 microphone inputs mapped on 16 faders, together with four dedicated stereo line channels and four dedicated FX Returns from the four stereo Lexicon FX processors that can mix up to 48 inputs. The desk’s small footprint has also reportedly proven useful for Sky Racing, whose control room is limited in space. ‘It’s a nice, adaptable console for the audio directors allowing them to perform a task how they want to perform it,’ concluded Mr Marshall.
