DWR’s SOS Charity fund starts providing relief

SOUTH AFRICA: In December 2016, DWR Distribution announced that it was establishing a charity aimed at helping freelancers that have suffered a loss of earnings due to illness or injury. Now, the charitable organisation, named the SOS Charity fund, is up and running, providing relief to those that need it, including Pieter Coetzee.

Mr Coetzee was setting up for an event in Cape Town when he fell from a great height, shattering his spine and severely injuring both feet. He has since undergone several surgeries and is set to begin rehabilitation shortly to learn how to walk again. The SOS fund provided assistance by funding the relocation of Mr Coetzee’s mother, Charmainné, from Pretoria to Cape Town. This has enabled her to be nearby to care for her son.

Additionally, the charity has stated that it will pay Mr Coetzee R5,000 per month for the next three months, to ease the financial burden.

‘While we were excited to help people with the initiation of the SOS project, it really was heartbreaking to hear this news and we actually felt quite helpless,’ explained DWR’s Duncan Riley. ‘Pieter is a young man in the prime of his life. We are just very grateful that things are looking good and know that he will have a full and colourful life ahead of him.’

‘We really do appreciate this,’ said Mr Coatzee and his mother. ‘A big thanks to everyone involved.’

The original plan for the SOS fund was that it be an independent charity, operated by its own board. However, following discussions with industry representatives and a number of rental companies, it was put forth that DWR should run the organisation, helping those that need it in any way that it sees fit.

‘We trust the industry will contact us when they hear of a need that has to be met, and hopefully we will be able to help as much as we can,’ said Mr Riley. ‘We hope that we can make a difference to people in our industry when they experience a crisis.’
