UAE: Barasti Beach recently hosted its largest technical production to date in the form of Sound Collective’s UAE debut. eclipse Staging Services supplied the full technical setup, tackling the challenges presented by a tight deadline and the unstable, sandy foundation of the venue for the EDM festival.

The tight deadline was due to the fact that the beach remained open to the public in the days leading up to the event. Therefore, eclipse was given four days to set up the stage and equipment in-between opening hours. The ground being made of sand also posed a potential problem.

‘Building a structure on sand will slow things down a bit,’ said Bryan Kelly of eclipse. ‘We had to make sure we had the structure level before lifting anything 14m in the air. Once we had this done, the structure went up relatively quick.’

Mr Kelly designed the stage setting with curved truss of three different sizes and 100 lighting fixtures, creating a tunnel effect. Each truss was then decked with a lightweight wood effect to match the white wooden cabins installed across the venue as bars. The backdrop, meanwhile, was formed from a large 9mm LED screen driven by a Green Hippo Taiga media server. The stage design, as well as lighting and video, was pre-visualised using Wysiwyg.

For the audio solution, eclipse’s senior audio engineer, Tariq Al-Hassan, designed a system to fill the 20m wide stage. This comprised hangs of six d&b audiotechnik J8 and two J12 loudspeakers, while four V8s served as front-fills and an array of eight J-Subs, angled outward to fill the beach. Two centre J-Infra subwoofers handled the lows. L-Acoustics DV-Dosc and DV-Subs were employed for DJ-fills and d&b’s M2 cabinets provided monitoring for artists and dancers on stage.

‘We kept the whole system digital from DJ to boxes over AES at 96kHz with a DiGiCo SD-Mini-Rack on stage and SD9 at FOH on an Optocore ring,’ noted Mr Al-Hassan. ‘We also used Waves MaxxBCL to control and enhance the overall experience.’

‘The production and organisational crews worked together amazingly, and I can’t have asked for a better team to work with,’ concluded Mr Kelly. ‘It was a pleasure to be a part of the inaugural Sound Collective festival in the UAE.
