Prolyte Campus returns to Johannesburg

SOUTH AFRICA: Prolyte product manager Ruud de Deugd recently visited Johannesburg for the second consecutive year, presenting a Prolyte Campus Workshop at the warehouses of DWR Distribution. The emphasis of the workshop was on safety when rigging and attendees received hands-on training and were able to ask plenty of questions.
‘We are very glad that the industry takes this seriously, that they attend training and are committed to building the right way,’ said Robert Izzett from DWR. ‘Lives are at stake and our aim is to ensure that our clients do things the right way.’
Those taking part in the workshop provided good feedback. ‘I learnt a lot and even if you know what you are doing, it’s good to have a new viewpoint,’ said Lee Irving from production company Solid Rock. Morne Boshoff from Visual Audio Productions attended the course to refresh his knowledge: ‘Sometimes you forget things, and this was great to brush up on my skills,’ he said.
Trained as a mechnical engineer, Mr de Deugd believes that while there is always work to do in the area of health and safety, that South Africa is on the right track. ‘There is a health and safety standard found in the South African Bureau of Standards titled SANS 10366, which is a guideline to health and safety at events,’ he explained. ‘I believe this will evolve but at least it’s a good starting point. That said, the South African rental companies are not behind Europe in their knowledge and mindfulness of safety.’
