Sony puts Al Jazeera timetable in place

QATAR: Having been awarded the systems integration contract for the upgrade of Al Jazeera’s main broadcast site in Doha, Sony Professional Solutions MEA (Sony PSMEA) has set out its timetable for delivering the facility.

‘The four main channels are going to be upgraded to today’s level of technology, and also interrelated so they can start sharing content and be more robust in their architecture. That takes a lot of planning and a lot of detailed design,’ explained Rob Sherman, MD at Sony PSMEA. ‘We’re now very busy with that. We’re designing everything at the moment.’

Obviously, one of the key parts of the design phase is finalising the equipment which will be put to use at the new facility. ‘The majority of equipment has been decided on. The majority is all in place because that was what we were contracted to do,’ said Mr Sherman. ‘In general, the overall design was completed and now we’re into the detailed bits and pieces.’

Parallel to this, Sony PSMEA is also working on the early deliverables for the project. ‘We’ll start delivering from about early summer and have a lot in place before Christmas certainly,’ stated Mr Sherman. ‘The studios are also being upgraded and rebuilt as well which will also be delivered around that time. There’s a lot going on in fast track – which is early deliverables – and the planning phase.

‘It was a satisfying win,’ he concluded. ‘We are very privileged to get a big order like that.’
