Sound Creations’ conference solution for IGAD

SOMALIA: For the first time in more than 30 years, Somalia played host to a high level summit as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s (IGAD) 28th Extra Ordinary Summit was held recently in Mogadishu at the newly built Peace Hotel. The main order of business at the event was the country’s security situation ahead of its scheduled parliamentary election. With discussions of such importance taking place, systems integrator Sound Creations was contracted to ensure high-quality audio, clarity and intelligibility.

The venue’s architect, Tsavo Wild Design and Interiors, sought acoustic treatment for the hotel with the Summit in mind and upon discovering Sound Creations during this search, called upon the integrator to supply and install an audio solution. The solution supplied was designed by the systems integrator’s architectural acoustician, Robert Otieno, and comprised 18 ITC T-208A ceiling speakers powered by a T-240BU amplifier, which were fed by an Allen & Heath ZED-420 analogue mixer.

The project brief had specified a wireless conference system that could facilitate up to 15 delegates. To meet this requirement a combination of Shure wireless microphone systems were implemented, consisting of seven BLX288E/PG58 systems that each supply two PG58 handheld microphones with a BLX88 receiver, and a single BLX24E/PG58 system that includes a BLX2/G58 microphones and a BLX4 receiver. A Sollatek SVS20 stabiliser was also deployed, while the acoustic treatment was taken care of by eight Rockwool Prolox SL950 sound absorption panels mounted to the walls.

The lead project manager on behalf of Sound Creations, Erick Ngali, provided training for the hotel’s staff on the new system once the installation was complete. Training lasted two days, following which the staff members were commissioned to use the sound system that reportedly ‘delivered an outstanding audio experience’ during the Summit.

Following the event, the audio solution remains installed at the hotel, which will now look to capitalise on being equipped to host high-profile conferences.

IGAD is formed of an eight-country trade bloc in Africa that includes Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya and Uganda, as wells as Somalia. In attendance at the 28th Extra Ordinary Summit were Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia and Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, as well as a number of state officials from the participating countries. Representatives from the United Nations, African Union Commission, League of Arabs and European Union were also present. Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn of Ethiopia serves as the IGAD chairman and led the proceedings.
