AEQ’s Phoenix family benefits from firmware upgrades

AEQ’s Phoenix Studio and Mercury family of audiocodecs have benefitted from a number of recent firmware upgrades, providing both products with a plethora of functionality and performance improvements. Due to an embedded web-browser in each unit, the versions are simple to upgrade; all a user need do is send the new files using a PC connected to the unit in question.

The feature cited as the ‘most important step forward’ is the inclusion of PhoenixControl remote control software, meaning that all AEQ audiocodecs (with the exception of the Phoenix Mobile) can be managed and configured through any PC running Windows from a remote location, including over the internet.

In addition to providing functions such as common and individual phonebook management with import/export functions, events log, configuration save/load/reset and remote high-resolution vu-meters, the software also boasts a detailed and intuitive way of displaying equipment configuration.

Further key features include SNMP management and Multiple-Unicast, the former allowing Phoenix codecs to communicate with up to three SNMP clients for integration into an existing management system – including equipment from different manufacturers. The SNMP provides an overview of the status of the system, alerting a user if any loss of audio or connection should occur.

Meanwhile, the inclusion of Multiple-Unicast means that Phoenix codecs can now send IP audio streams to multiple destinations using standard broadcast and multicast addresses within local networks, but can also replicate traffic to a pre-defined list of individual, remote IP addresses. This function is said to be particularly useful when sending the same program to several regions or transmitters using a single transmitting audiocodec.

A further benefit presents itself in the form of a single-codec version of the manufacturer’s control SW – which is provided with every unit at no extra cost. However should a user require multi-codec management, this is available at an optional license fee.
