API 500 Series plug-in collection arrives for UAD

Universal Audio (UA) is bringing the API 500 Series EQ Plug-In Collection to its UAD Powered Plug-Ins platform and Apollo interface. Fully endorsed by API and developed by UA, the collection comprises emulations of the API 550A 3-Band and API 560 graphic equalisers.

The 550A and 560 modular EQs were originally designed by Saul Walker in the late 1960s, and included the 2520 op-amp and proportional Q circuitry. According to UA, the emulations accurately capture ‘the filter shapes, band interactions, and unique filter amplifier clipping behaviours of the vintage units to exacting detail’.

A number of presets from leading engineers and producers are also included, with contributions from the likes of Ross Hogarth, Vance Powell, Eli Janney, Carl Glanville and Darrell Thorp.

In other Universal Audio news, the Apollo interface is being upgraded with new features intended to turn the unit into ‘a scalable system capable of recording larger music projects on both Mac and Windows 7 machines’.

Among the enhancements is multi-unit cascading, which combines two Apollo interfaces into a single system via FireWire or Thunderbolt. This provides simultaneous use of 16 analogue inputs and outputs, eight Apollo mic preamps, and 12 digital inputs and outputs. Additionally, a redesigned Console application is intended to offer improved visual feedback, a new Mix-Merge mode, and a Pro Tools mode.

Finally, the manufacturer has debuted Softube’s Vintage Amp Room, Metal Amp Room, Bass Amp Room, and Acoustic Feedback Deluxe plug-ins for the UAD Powered Plug-Ins platform and Apollo.
