Audio-Technica unveils condenser design ‘milestone’ with the AT5040

Audio-Technica has launched its flagship 50 Series of elite studio mics with the AT5040 cardioid condenser microphone. Hailed as a ‘milestone in condenser design’ for the manufacturer, the new offering employs an innovative large-diaphragm element – Audio Technica’s largest ever – by combining four ultra-thin (2 micron) rectangular diaphragms that function together as a single element.

Although primarily designed for use as a vocal mic, the AT5040’s large-diaphragm characteristics and fast transient response make it suitable for recording acoustic instruments.

Key to its appeal is the mic’s unique element design, which offers an increase in diaphragm surface area that allows for a natural increase in energy transfer, resulting in greater depth of sound. A further standout feature is its electret design, which provides more energy to the internal amplifier circuitry by boosting the output level – resulting in increased dynamic range, low noise, and high sensitivity.

In addition, the back plate of each diaphragm holds a fixed charge and has been aged to provide energy stabilisation and exacting charge linearity, resulting in a reduction in both frequency response peaks and diaphragm break-up distortion.

Advanced shock mounting has also been incorporated into the design, which effectively decouples the capsule from the microphone body. For additional isolation, each AT5040 is also provided with the manufacturer’s AT8480 shock mount.
