Blackmagic Design adds Thunderbolt technology to UtraStudio range

Blackmagic Design is shipping UltraStudio 4K, its new rack mount capture and playback device based on Thunderbolt technology. Thunderbolt technology, developed by Intel in collaboration with Apple, enables UltraStudio 4K to offer high enough speed for true 4K playback which is four times the resolution of regular HD 1080 video. It can also take advantage of long Thunderbolt cables that can be up to 30m away from the host computer.

UltraStudio 4K features full resolution 4K support, dual stream 3D capture/playback, 10bit hardware architecture, dual link 3Gb/s SDI, support for up to 1080p60 in SDI, component analogue and HDMI connections which support full SD, HD and 4K. The single rack unit design comes with a wide range of rear connectors, whilst the front panel features an integrated colour LCD in addition to video and audio input buttons. The built-in power supply negates the need for an external plug pack, whilst the rear panel includes a large number of video and audio connections using standard connectors.

Dual Link 3Gb/s SDI, HDMI and analogue component/s-video/composite are included in addition to balanced anilogue and AES/EBU digital audio capture and playback. UltraStudio 4K can be used for 3D workflow as it features both interleaved/side by side and dual stream capture and playback. The Dual Link SDI connections allows dual stream 3D where capture and playback is done via two independent channels. The Dual Link 3Gb/s SDI also allows a new video standard for handling 4:2:2 4K playback for monitoring and is fully compatible with the manufacturer’s Mini Converter SDI to HDMI 4K and Mini Converter SDI Multiplex products.

UltraStudio Mini Monitor and UltraStudio Mini Recorder are two new capture and playback solutions featuring 3Gb/s SDI and HDMI connections together with Thunderbolt technology. UltraStudio Mini Monitor and UltraStudio Mini Recorder are two separate products, one for recording SDI and HDMI video, and the other model for playing back SDI or HDMI video. The tiny designs can be used for portable tasks that don’t require both capture and playback in a single device.

Both products allow users to go on location for uncompressed and compressed capture and playback tasks at the highest 10 bit SD/HD quality. With Thunderbolt technology, they can be moved easily between computers and can capture from decks, cameras and live video sources, before outputting to monitors, projectors and media servers.
