DPA announces modular mic range

DPA Microphones has launched a new modular range of microphones dubbed the Reference Standard series.

According to the manufacturer, the range offers ‘increased flexibility, sound quality and cost-effectiveness’.

Described as building on DPA’s Compact and Standard 4006, 4011, 4015 and 4017 mic models, the Reference Standard 4000 Series is intended to make a wide selection of capsules available at different price points and for varying applications, while three new preamplifiers are avalable. The first is the MMP-A, which boasts an active drive for impedance balancing. Second is the MMP-B, with low-cut and high-boost filters. Finally, the 45mm MMP-C preamp is designed to offer a ‘softer character’. The modular design of the new range means that any of its mics can be transformed to fit the specific requirement of the user.

Meanwhile, the manufacturer has also announced the 2000 series of twin diaphragm capsules, which DPA co-founder Morten Stove has indicated are intended as an entry point into the new modular series. ‘We never thought it would be possible to obtain such quality at this price,’ Mr Stove explained. ‘A big advantage is the fact that you can start out with the capsules from the 2000 series and then later upgrade to the 4000 series, as the preamps are the same.’

The 2000 series comprises the MMC2006 omni and MMC2011 cardioid capsules, with the 2006 boasting two capsules from the 4060 omnidirectional miniature, mounted back to back, and the 2011 including two capsules from the 4080 miniature cardioid. A modular, carbon fibre stereo mounting bar is equipped with Rycote shock mounts in different sizes and tensions to position mics at the desired angle for stereo recording. This mounting device can also be screwed into a gooseneck for mounting inside a piano, or connected directly to a camera stand.

Among the features of the range are greater SPL handling, with cardioid and wide-cardioid capsules now coping with 139dB(A) before reaching one per cent THD, bringing the dynamic range up to 120dB(A) – 14 times higher SPL than previously. The maximum SPL is increased to 159dB(A) when using the MMP-A preamp and 145dB and 152dB for the MMP-B and MMP-C preamp respectively. The omnis can also handle 50 per cent higher SPL before. RF rejection has also been improved to greater than 60dB, 50dB and 40dB for the MMP-A, MMP-B and MMP-C respectively.
